What used to be a town with busy Court houses, Bushrangers and busy town centres, is now significantly quieter. The lures of east and west have dissolved the majority of the town's once large population, and the "Bushranger" past remains only in its museums and tourist centres. The NPWS maintains and manages many of the original features of Hartley such as the Court House which recreates the atmosphere of Hartley's History.
The ability of Hartley to maintain the elements of Australias history make it revered and vital to the region. The simplistic commerce, and the wide, western N.S.W plains allow visitors to capture its first glimpse of the country, and is in stark, yet beautiful contrast to the Blue Mountains to its east.
With no rail access, Hartley is only accessible by road, at just over 2 hours from Sydney. Hartley is worth a look for its charm that is bound to win you over.
