1 of several brilliant views at the caves
About the town
74km from Katoomba are some of the world's most amazing limestone caves. There are 3 caves open for free viewing with a further 9 accessible via guided tours. For the more adventurous, there are 4 undeveloped caves dedicated for more personal tours that allow you to see these caves as the explorers originally found them. There are approximately 10 tours daily from 10am to 5pm daily Monday to Friday with an evening tour at 8pm Saturday.
The bushy 2416 ha reserve surrounding the caves offer visitors a network of walking trails. For the serious bushwalker, there is a a relatively easy 3 day walk along the 42km Six Foot Track from Katoomba to the Jenolan Caves.
Budget to luxury accommodation and a broad range of eateries are available nearby.
How do you get there?
From Sydney, take the M4 Motorway travelling west through the Blue Mountains, Katoomba and Mt. Victoria on the Great Western Highway. Shortly after Victoria Pass, the Jenolan Caves turnoff is found just past the village of Hartley. Turning left, this road passes through Hampton and finally Jenolan Caves.
The trip offers spectacular scenery on an all sealed road that can be completed comfortably in 3 hours from Sydney.
Which caves are best to visit?
This is a hard question to answer as each visitor has different expectations and different capabilities. So what is good for one person may not be suitable for another.
The Lucas, Imperial and Chifley Caves are excellent all round tours with a wide variety of features that are also economical in price. The Lucas Cave is the longest of these tours and the one hour Imperial Cave tour is the easiest. The Chifley Cave is noted for its use of coloured lights.
If you have time for only one tour, visit the Lucas, Imperial or Chifley. If you have time to visit more than one cave, why not take advantage of our two and three multi-cave concession tickets. These packages may include a choice of either the Orient or Temple of Baal Caves as well as Lucas, Imperial and Chifley Cave tours. Perhaps the most popular two cave combination is the Lucas Cave followed by the Orient Cave. This allows visitors to see the highest and widest chambers at Jenolan in the Lucas Cave and the delicate crystalline decoration in the Orient.
Here are some examples of two and three cave packages that may help you choose your tours. They allow for variety, time between tours and enough time for lunch. Please note that cave times are subject to change and it is best to check at the Ticket Office for current tour times.
